The thing about spending a lot of time outdoors, especially a such a wild place as the low country near the ocean, is that you meet a lot of interesting creatures, and many of them are not of the human variety. Cape May County, the spiritual home of Haven Marina Resorts, is one of the world’s most celebrated migratory funnels, where our narrow peninsula offers a critical stopover for millions of birds, butterflies, and dragonflies on Atlantic Flyway. Southbound Raptors, songbirds, and monarchs concentrate here before crossing the Delaware Bay, and stop to rest on the return trip north.
We currently have at least one Bald Eagle who seems to enjoy the marina at Bidwell Creek, as they enjoy circling the docks in search of food. It’s hard to tell male from female in an adult Bald Eagle, and until you see two at once, it’s hard to know if we have a mating pair or a single adult looking for a mate.
While we haven’t seem them ourselves, we already have reports of hummingbirds in the area, and word has it that the Spring Peepers have emerged from their winter slumber, so clearly Spring is officially here.
